Where to find Cooltext
If the text tool on Gimp is too basic, use Cooltext, a free site specifically for making text images on a transparent background. It's completely free and has loads of variations to choose from. It is ridulously easy to use, just play with it for 10 minutes and you'll have learned it all!

FLAMING TEXT is good to use too.
